What is cowboy mounted shooting?
Cowboy mounted shooting is the fastest game on horseback — riders in full western attire gallop through a course of 10 balloon targets, shooting blank .45 caliber rounds from two single-action revolvers. Every run is timed to the hundredth of a second. Miss a balloon and take a five-second penalty. The fastest clean run wins.
The sport is sanctioned by two national organizations: the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) and United States Mounted Shooting (USMS). Together they run hundreds of events each year across the country, from local club shoots to the World Championship. Riders compete in divisions by skill level, so beginners and seasoned competitors ride side by side.
If you're new to the sport, the best first step is finding a local club. Most welcome visitors at any practice — no horse, no guns, no experience required.
